A THING of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness…

– J. Keats

I’m a little obsessed with Keats right now. Just a little. It all started with my tearful viewing of Bright Star last Wednesday and here we are — with lines from Keats’ sonnet “You Say You Love” painted on my wall in Rockwood Jade interior paint.

I am ultimately stunned by one thing: his utter consumption (no pun intended) by his art. His life was poetry. Yet he was so in love with Fanny Brawne. But he didn’t ever think to occupy himself with a job that would provide her with some kind of financial stability. No, he decided to run around in the rain and catch actual consumption and then die in Italy alone. People like that – whose lives are so completely consumed with whatever they love the most – they just shock me so much.

Anyway none of that craziness turns me off from his poetry. I love it. On the one hand it’s really deep stuff — it’s very brilliant, he was a smart guy — but on the other it’s very honest, which I like. The poem I so tritely painted on my wall ends like this:

“O breathe a word or two of fire!
Smile, as if those words should burn be,
Squeeze as lovers should – O kiss
And in thy heart inurn me!
O love me truly!”

Delightful ?
